The ReLEx® SMILE treatment is a laser treatment of myopia, with or without astigmatism, performed in its entirety by the Visumax femtosecond laser, ZEISS. The treatment works like the LASIK to reshape the cornea using the laser, with the course of treatment being similar to that of a conventional LASIK treatment (please see procedure for a LASER treatment). There is no use of the excimer laser, only the femtosecond laser is applied to the cornea. The main difference is that there is no incision of the corneal flap. Corneal integrity is thus more respected

During the procedure, the femtosecond laser is applied for 25 seconds on each eye. A very fine stromal lenticule (20 to 100 micrometers depending on the correction performed) is removed. Visual recovery is very quick, and you will be able to resume normal activity the next day.

The advantages of the ReLEx SMILE are related to the respect of the corneal ultra-structure thanks to the micro-invasive character of this surgery:

  • L'absence de complication de type "plis du volet ", il n'est plus utile d'éviter de se frotter les yeux dans les suites de l'opération

  • The absence of complications of ‘folding’, it is therefore no longer necessary to avoid rubbing your eyes after your operation.

  • The preserved ‘lacrimal reflex’, which means the probability of having post-operative ocular dryness (dry-eyes) is very small.

  • Possible treatment even in patients with dry eyes (long-term contact lens wearers, for example).

  • Very rapid healing, limiting the risk of infection during early postoperative activities.

  • Corneal biomechanics respected, preserving your pre-operative corneal rigidity.

Your operation in 3 steps:

Before your intervention

On the day of your intervention, you will spend an hour with us. Upon arrival at the clinic, you will be given a pre-medication. You will be given a sterile robe to wear, ready for the operating room.

During your operation

During your operation you will be lying on an operating chair. After following strict antiseptic regulations, local anesthesia will be performed. A few drops of eye-drops are enough. The 20-minute procedure consists of two steps:

- The VisuMax laser creates a lenticule corresponding to the visual defect to be corrected

- The lenticule is extracted by your surgeon

The treatment is complete. The procedure is not painful and perfectly safe.

After your intervention

You will need to be met at our clinic by an accompanying person in order to depart. A rest of 3 to 4 hours with closed eyes is advised. Post-operative care is limited to anti-inflammatory and antibiotic eye drops. The post-operative check-up can be performed between 1 and 10 days. It is advisable to avoid infectious risk situations for 3 to 4 days.

Please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be delighted to answer all of your questions.

The SMILE treatment ensures each patient maximum effectiveness with minimum risk. The priority of your surgeon is to obtain good quality of vision for you and your eyes, even up to 20/20!

SMILE surgery offers more precision thanks to its high-performance tools. Scientific studies have shown an increase in treatment accuracy (David Donate, Femtosecond laser precision, SFO, May 2016, Paris, France).

SMILE is more accurate than the excimer laser. The Visumax femtosecond laser offers precision equal to or better than the excimer laser reaching 0.04 micrometers. The reliability and precision of the incision is extremely high.

Recovery is as fast as that of LASIK (David Donate, SMILE (Extraction of a refractive lenticule): Role of laser energy, SAFIR 7 & 8 May 2016, Paris). In addition, scientific studies (including that of Dr. Dan Reinstein of the London Vision Clinic, published in the scientific journal "Eye World") showed a marked decrease in dry eyes, and in long-term corneal stability (Dan Z Reinstein, Biomechanics of ReLEx SMILE: A keyhole intrastromal form of keratomileusis, Eye World, February 2013).

The results obtained in our ophthalmological center are very satisfactory:

  • 99% of patients achieved visual acuity equivalent to 20/20 without glasses as early as the first treatment
  • 100% of patients achieve visual acuity equal to 16/20 without glasses from the first treatment

If the visual acuity is not considered sufficient, a second treatment is possible to obtain 20/20 without glasses. The SubCap-LE is a process that involves creating a SMILE treatment within a SMILE treatment. The results of the SubCap-Le complements are very satisfactory (David Donate, Preliminary Evidence of Successful Enhancement After a Primary SMILE Procedure with the Sub-Cap-Lenticule-Extraction Technique, 2015, Journal of Refractive Surgery).
